Spring Song

“Gordon Getty’s Spring Song is a slow, calming Romantic-style-influenced work,…”
Tiina Kiik,
The WholeNote, April 2022

Cellist Matt Haimovitz’s PRIMAVERA II the rabbits is the second of six albums presenting his fascinating series of 81 world premieres for solo cello, THE PRIMAVERA PROJECT, which was inspired by Botticelli’s painting Primavera and Charline von Heyl’s large-scale triptych Primavera 2020. Gordon Getty’s first contribution to this project is Spring Song (the second is Winter Song), which Matt premiered at Festival Napa Valley in July 2021.

COMPOSER’S NOTES
I got the idea for Spring Song before dawn on the deadline day for Matt’s Primavera project, and wrote it out at my piano before breakfast. The title might not have occurred to me if Matt’s theme had been something else. Does it fit? Spring is the season of awakening. But the piece had a mind of its own, as I wrote it, and seemed to say more about memories of things and springs past. If Matt gets around to a winter project, and I’m invited to contribute, I suppose I’ll find myself writing a scherzo giocoso.
