New studio recording of “Goodbye, Mr. Chips” released on Pentatone

On January 17, 2025, Pentatone released a new studio recording of Gordon Getty’s fourth opera, Goodbye, Mr. Chips. The recording features tenor Nathan Granner, soprano Melody Moore, baritone Lester Lynch, and bass-baritone Kevin Short, as well as the San Francisco Boys Chorus and Barbary Coast Orchestra, under the baton of Dennis Doubin.

Based on the beloved 1934 novella Goodbye, Mr. Chips and other stories by James Hilton, the opera tells the heart-warming story of a teacher at Brookfield, an English boarding school for boys, to which “Chips” devotes most of his adult life. The opera chronicles Chips’ story of love, loss and learning over his decades-long tenure at Brookfield.

Pentatone previously released a digital album of highlights from the film version of the opera in 2022, but this is the first recording available of the full opera.
