USF hosts San Francisco premiere of “Goodbye, Mr. Chips”

On February 2, the University of San Francisco presented a screening of the film of Gordon Getty’s opera Goodbye, Mr. Chips at its Presentation Theater. This was the film’s first screening in Gordon Getty’s home town of San Francisco. Acknowledging his recent 90th birthday at a reception before the film, USF’s President Father Paul Fitzgerald honored him as a distinguished alumnus, presenting him with a framed gift of opera and symphony reviews written for the school newspaper, The Foghorn, by Gordon Getty when he was a student. He added that it was Mr. Getty who persuaded the editor to include classical music reviews in the newspaper.
